Memphis, June 19, 1998: -- Tom Farrington, Manager of Boat Maintenance and
Engineering at National
Marine, has released the results of his company's extensive test of the ESP on a
6,000-hp Towboat. When asked about the results Mr. Farrington said, “I would
feel safe to say we are saving at least 5 percent on our northbound lower
Mississippi boats by using the ESP.” The tests also support the claim that the
ESP saves fuel without slowing down. The data actually showed an increase in
speed of .17 mph.
Within the past year, National Marine has installed ESP's on three 7,000-hp
boats, two 6,000-hp boats and one 4,300-hp boat. Results show the pilots use the
ESP over 90 percent of the time when underway, including slow running and
traveling southbound on the Lower Mississippi River. Mr. Farrington estimates
that the first two days pushing up river saves enough fuel to cover the monthly
lease payment. Based on these test results, an average tow from Baton Rouge to
Cairo, using the ESP would arrive 4.5 hours sooner and burn 3,000 gallons less
fuel.
Copies of the test report will be available by the end of June.
